Sir David Attenborough helps celebrate 30 years of Thames conservation

Kew Society was delighted to attend the 30th Anniversary Celebrations of the Thames Landscape Strategy at Syon Park.

It was a wonderful day with Patrons Kim Wilkie and Sir David Attenborough in attendance, along with many of the Thames Landscape Strategy’s supporters from throughout the years. Guests watched the high tide come up the tidal flow meadow – a unique site as the banks of Syon have not been altered in over 600 years.

Thames Landscape Strategy announced that it has secured funding from the Thames Regional Flood & Coastal Committee for the next three years of work on the Joint Thames Strategies Refresh – a partnership between Thames Landscape Strategy, Thames Estuary Partnership, Thames Strategy – Kew to Chelsea and in collaboration with the UK Environment Agency.

The project will deliver a more resilient Thames, from Surrey to the Sea, through improved flood risk and landscape management, including environment, recreation, access, heritage and economic growth.

Kew Society contributes to the TLS through the Community Advisory Group which provides a bottom-up, community led approach to environmental management that has underpinned the TLS since its inception.

The Thames Landscape Strategy marked it’s 30th anniversary on 19th September 2024.

We look forward to strengthening our relationship with this important initiative to conserve, promote and enhance for the future one of the world’s great river landscapes, the Arcadian Thames, between Weybridge, Hampton and Kew.
