Reopening of the Thames Towpath delayed

Image shows a large orange digger on a pontoon against a river bank. There are sand bags to the right of the pontoon and evidence of pile driving work beyond that. The river flows in the foreground and there are trees in the background and a clear blue sky

The Thames Towpath from Richmond Lock to Kew Gardens remains closed for essential repair works, following the collapse of a section last year.

Due to the challenging nature of the worksite and ground conditions impacting the installation of sheet piling equipment, the reopening of the towpath has unfortunately been delayed.

The Council now expects works to be completed October 2025.

You can hear from Cllr. Alexander Ehmann, Chair of the Transport and Air Quality Committee, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, about progress at the site by clicking here.

We look forward to being able to walk this stretch of the towpath again soon!
