Major repair works commence on Thames Towpath breach

Richmond Council announced this week that the major repair work has commenced on the Thames towpath between Richmond Lock and Kew Gardens car park.

Image shows a winter scene with grey skies and a high river. The water appears a muddy colour. The path is collapsed and the river is flowing through the breach. We can see broken trees in the foreground and a grey metal barrier at the other side of the breach.

This work follows extensive emergency and preparatory works by the Council’s contractors to prevent further damage to the towpath and secure the site, as we reported here.

The towpath has been closed since the 19 October 2024, following the structural collapse of a section of the pathway.

In its recent announcement, CIlr. Alexander Ehmann, Chair of the Transport and Air Quality Committee, stated that “the permanent repair works were now underway and progressing to schedule” with the aim of completion in summer 2025.  The works will also incorporate ecological and safety improvements where possible.

The Kew Society, along with Kew residents, look forward to the reopening of this much loved route between Kew and Richmond!
