Investigation work at Kew Railway Bridge enters new phase

Kew Railway Bridge work site June 2025
Walkers and cyclist using the Thames Towpath at Kew Railway Bridge will have noticed changes to the worksite around the bridge. In recent weeks the substantial wooden safety hoarding has been replaced by a less imposing fence.

As we reported in April, Network Rail began investigations following the appearance of cracks in the brickwork. These had worsened since earlier in the year.
Following a request by our Environment Lead, Dr Sarah Clarke, we have received this statement from Network Rail:
“The anchors have now been installed, and we are currently investigating the root cause of the deterioration affecting that corner of the structure. Once we have identified the cause, we will move forward with designing the necessary repairs.
Our project at this location began in July, and we are actively monitoring movement in the bridge. As this is a major structure, resolving the issues will take time.
We are also in contact with conservation officers from the local authority to ensure our work is understood and coordinated appropriately. We’re engaging with the right teams to carry out the work sensitively and responsibly”
