Celebrating 65 Years of Twinning!

Richmond upon Thames is set to celebrate a 65 years of twinning with Fontainebleau, France, and Konstanz, Germany, during a reaffirmation weekend from 6 to 8 June 2025. The event is packed with exciting activities for residents of all ages to enjoy.  It will bring together up to 500 guests, including dignitaries, under the theme “Youth and Future” to highlight intergenerational and forward-looking connections.

With a full weekend of events, residents have much to look forward to.  Celebrations include receptions, a parade, sporting events, concerts, and the ringing of St. Mary Magdalene Church’s bells. The European Youth Orchestra, featuring musicians from Lodi, Italy, and Alba Iulia, Romania, will also perform.

While the Kew Society isn’t organising a specific event during the weekend, we encourage local participation to strengthen awareness of Richmond’s twinning relationships.  This landmark reaffirmation offers Kew residents a chance to celebrate shared histories, strengthen European ties, and embrace a collaborative future.

Look out for activities in the run up to the reaffirmation weekend.   These include the Richmond Fair (May 10) and Twickenham Green Fair (May 26) where there will be reaffirmation-themed stalls with commemorative items. The Europakonzil youth conference (May 4-8) in Konstanz will encourage international dialogue, while Europe Day (May 9) will see the Council of Europe flag raised in Twickenham.

European visitors for the reaffirmation weekend are staying with host families, and more hosts are welcome. You can find more details and get involved via the Richmond in Europe Association website  where you’ll find a full program of events.

Draw-off Walk – November 2022

For the past few years, The Kew Society has been delighted to offer its members an annual draw-off of the tidal Thames walk Richmond to Ham. The draw-off occurs when Richmond Lock remains open to allow river water to flow out with the tides to the mouth of the Thames – giving time for maintenance of the lock, weirs and sluices.
